Cathy & Steve | Perfectly paired

November 29, 2010

It’s an oft-spoken refrain: opposites attract. I don’t really believe it. I think we seek a match and matches are often not copies, but rather are decidedly different in a complementary way, like flavors or colors. Salty + Sweet is rather tasty. Purple + Yellow accent one another nicely. And Cathy + Steve are kindof like that. He’s analytical to the core; numbers are his friends. Cathy is hands-on, literally. She’s a physical therapist. Together they highlight each others strengths and ultimately, their equation tilts towards fun and flirty with just a touch of goofy.

For their engagement session they were up for anything so I suggested the happiest thing I could think of: balloons. But first we played in the woods to get a few classic engagement shots and then we brought out the helium.

There is a sortof kid’s birthday party trend going on in weddings right now and frankly, I love it. I firmly believe that we never outgrow the love of, need for and sheer delight in the trappings of our childhood: balloons, cupcakes, ice cream cones, confetti, you name it. It makes me smile. And yes, Cathy liked the balloons, but really it was Steve that lit up when I brought them out to the field where we were shooting. I could feel him loose himself just a little in the fun of holding the balloons, watching them dance in the wind. And the paper hearts were a little something in my bag that just seemed right for the two of them. In the end I couldn’t help thinking that Cathy + Steve may be opposites on paper but in real life they are the perfect complement to one another.
