Felicia & Charlie’s May Wedding

June 1, 2010

Felicia & Charlie’s wedding day dawned warm, but not overly so, and the sun was accompanied by an unusual white mist. The cloudy fog was selective, curling around St. Hedwig’s steeple on Brady, camping out on Water Street through the Third Ward but lifting to reveal a warming sun in Walker’s Point. Much of the day had been planned around the water so I could tell that this foggy version of Milwaukee was not what Felicia had imagined during all those months of planning.

But sometimes the unexpected is what makes a wedding day the most memorable version of itself.

Felicia & Charlie could imagine walking down the aisle, they could scout pretty locations for photos and they could plan a well-timed and fun event. Still, for all the planning, they couldn’t plan for a rare fog that would shroud the city in such a way that each step would take them into their own private space where clouds made curtains to keep the world out. Like a romantic veil, the fog made the lake disappear and gave birds the courage to get too close to my lens. It made everyday spaces special and Felicia & Charlie’s wedding day one of the most scenically memorable days they and their guests had experienced in this city they all know so well. And then, in between glasses of crisp white wine and before everyone forgot they were dining in a room perched on the edge of a lake so big some mispeak and call it an ocean, the fog curled away. The Pilot House again had its blue, watery friend to look out over and everyone toasted Felicia & Charlie’s new marriage, glasses raised, smiles on every face.
